In the summer of 2010, we started the wonderful work of Outstretched Hands Center for Life, OHCL, with the help of Faiz Ramjohn and local governmental officials of Trinidad. Our mission once the doors were open, is to ensure that all those in need will have a safe haven that they can turn to. OHCL is a place where women and children can feel protected from the abuse they have encountered in life. There are many ongoing, horrific situations where women and children are afraid to go to bed, because of abuse. Now they have a safe place.
Carrying Bread would like to thank those of you who have assisted us in sending toys to Trinidad, Panama, Costa Rica and Immokolee, Florida. We were so very happy to know that in Trinidad, the first few children at Outstretched Hands Orphanage, will joyfully receive their toys on Christmas morning, December 25, 2010.
The gifts are but a small token of our love and care for the children in the orphanage. We at Carrying Bread would like to do much, much more. The needs of the orphanage go on daily. The house parents as well the children, have needs. The lights and water must be paid on a continual basis, among many other things. Therefore, the saying that "it takes a village to raise a child" is true. We at Carrying Bread must be that village. Many hands makes the work light. So your HANDS are needed.
During this trip to Trinidad, we were accompanied by Mrs Paula Castro from Naples, Florida. She and her two daughter's, Tilly and Micaela, helped shop for Christmas Toys for the children at Out Stretched Hands Orphanage. The toys were so very thoughtful and exactly what the little ones would like. They were hand picked with love and care.
We must continue to strengthen the hands of Mr. and Mr. Faiz and Jenny Ramjohn for their outstanding labor of love and care for these wonderful children, If there was only one child at the orphanage their commitment and dedication would remain the same. They are to be commended for such service.
It will provide an opportunity for the children to be re-educated and re-directed to be productive citizens in today's society. Furthermore, it will give the teenagers a chance to complete their goals in life, and rescue some of the abandoned babies. We also provide counseling for teenagers, helping them withdraw from drugs and substance abuse.
Now that the vision is in the planning stages, we have started the prep work on the front of the building. The ministry of Social Services has advised that we secure the premises properly before any intake of children. We are currently working on this, but you know our biggest challenge—finances.
We are having a fund raiser on the 30th July 2011 with the hope of raising the much needed money to construct the perimeter fence, so that we
can meet the Ministry's requirements.
